What is Healthy, Happy & Bright?

Healthy, Happy & Bright is Make Kids Matter's flagship family literacy program, delivering free, community-based literacy education to children in grades K-12 and their parents across the West Valley.

We believe literacy is a family endeavor. When parents build their reading and language skills alongside their children, the entire household transforms. Our program combines structured reading workshops, hands-on learning activities, book distribution, and parent education into one comprehensive experience.

Every service is completely free. Every book we give to a child is theirs to keep. Every family that walks through our doors is treated with dignity, respect, and love.

What We Offer

Comprehensive literacy and life skills programming designed for the whole family.

📚

Reading Workshops

Structured, interactive reading sessions organized by age and reading level. Children build fluency, comprehension, and confidence through guided practice and engaging activities.

🎓

Tutoring & Academic Support

One-on-one and small group tutoring for children needing additional help. Sessions are tailored to each student's assessed reading level for targeted improvement.

👩‍👧‍👦

Parent Education

Workshops helping parents build English-language skills, computer literacy, and strategies for supporting their children's learning at home. Because when parents grow, children thrive.

📖

Book Distribution

Every child receives age-appropriate books to take home and keep, building permanent home libraries for families who may not have a single book in the house.

🎒

School Supply Drives

Backpacks filled with notebooks, pencils, crayons, and essentials for students from low-income families, so every child starts the school year prepared and confident.

🤝

Family Bonding Activities

The Need in Our Community

In the West Valley, 34% of families speak non-English languages at home, creating barriers to educational access. 16% of local adults lack a high school diploma. Many children have zero books at home.

Research shows that children who are not reading proficiently by the end of third grade are four times more likely to drop out of high school. Our program intervenes early, builds skills consistently, and provides the resources families need to break the cycle.

Every child deserves to feel seen, heard, and valued. Literacy is the foundation that makes that possible.
