Building Brighter Futures Through Literacy & Life Skills

The Kids Matter Literacy & Life Skills Advancement Initiative is a comprehensive program designed to unlock the full potential of economically disadvantaged youth across Arizona's West Valley.

We combine structured literacy instruction with intentional life skills development -- reading workshops with goal-setting, tutoring with mentoring, book distribution with leadership exposure. The result is a program that builds not just academic competence, but the confidence and character young people need to succeed.

Every workshop, tutoring session, mentoring activity, and book we distribute is completely free to participating youth and families. Household income is never a barrier to a child's opportunity.

Two Pillars of Impact

Our program is built on two reinforcing foundations that work together to create lasting change.

Pillar One

Academic Achievement

Programs that build a foundation of academic competence, helping young people develop the skills to succeed in school and beyond.

  • Structured reading workshops by age and level
  • One-on-one and small group tutoring
  • Bilingual literacy resources for multilingual families
  • Book distribution -- every child builds a home library
  • School supply drives with backpacks and essentials
  • Family learning sessions for parents and children together
  • Pre- and post-assessments tracking reading growth
Pillar Two

Life Skills Development

Programs that build confidence and character, preparing young people for leadership, careers, and independent success.

  • Youth mentoring with university and community volunteers
  • Goal-setting and academic planning workshops
  • College awareness and readiness discussions
  • Resume writing and mock interview practice
  • Financial literacy fundamentals
  • Leadership development and teamwork exercises
  • Communication and professional skills building

Who We Serve

Reaching the young people who need us most in the West Valley.

📖

Early Learners (Ages 3-7)

Building foundational literacy skills, letter recognition, and a love of reading from the earliest years.

🎓

Elementary Students (Ages 8-12)

Students at risk of falling below grade-level reading benchmarks who need structured intervention and support.

💪

Teens & Young Adults (Ages 13-24)

Youth seeking mentorship, college awareness, workforce readiness, and leadership development.

👨‍👩‍👧

Parents & Caregivers

Adults building English-language proficiency and learning strategies to support their children's academic success at home.

The Need in Our Community

34%
of families in our service area speak non-English languages at home, creating significant barriers to educational access and school engagement.
16%
of local adults lack a high school diploma equivalent, limiting employment opportunities and economic mobility for entire families.
4x
Students not reading proficiently by third grade are four times more likely to drop out of high school, making early literacy intervention critical.
0
books at home for many children in our service area. Without access to books, structured enrichment, and mentoring, youth fall further behind each year.

Why Literacy & Life Skills Together?

Academic skills alone are not enough. A child who can read but lacks confidence, goal-setting skills, or awareness of future opportunities will still face barriers to success.

Our program intentionally integrates both pillars because they reinforce each other. When a teen practices reading during a tutoring session and then participates in a mock interview workshop, they see the direct connection between literacy and opportunity. When a parent builds English skills alongside their child, the whole family grows.

This integrated approach is what makes the Kids Matter Initiative different -- and what makes the outcomes lasting.
